Preying Praying Partner
Voice filled the air
In the wake of the night it could be heard
It was hers again, a sudden pierce through the quietness
Three days in a row, home turned hollow
A loud scream. An intense screech
A loud shout off a hardened mind
Not of a woman in prayer but the ranting of one in despair, wanting revenge.
She jumped around on the bed, stepping on him as she vented.
“Stooooooop…stop this minute!” he begged crouching on one knee, his left hand on her hips, as he tried desperately to pull her closer to him.
“The town is asleep. Our friends are in the next compound. They shall spread our ills…God forbid it is said we cannot keep our peace”.
Filled with sudden rage and a more pressing feeling of shame at the replay of their private moments; Kate snatched the control before Doctor Sophie could hit the PLAY button…again!
“How the goddamm heck did my husband record that?”
“That is beside the point now, Katey”. “That happened”. Dr Sophie’s voice wavered as she replied pointing to the large monitor screen. “And your husband also said it’s been that way for quite a while now”, her gentle, motherly look still uncomforting nonetheless.
“Listen to me Kate. You and I both know that is not who you are. You are a better woman than that; decent, a staunch believer never afraid to pray, a hardworking and respectful woman!"..."I watched you blossom into a very beautiful woman and I thanked God each day for those moments I had to play the role of a mother-figure in your life. I haven’t spent two decades of my life raising a bully of a wife,” disappointment hung on Dr Sophie's every word.
“You described another Kate Dr…I mean mom”.
“That was me several years ago. When I had all the innocence. When Raphael was the love of my life”.
“The only man I ever had eyes for. I loved him when he had nothing. Lived with him in that dump we joyfully called home and you know that. In the six years we’ve been married I’ve never come to you with my problems and his many shenanigans, what right does he have to do what he did! None! Absolutely none!” Kate cried out in near hysteria as she continued…
“Every one wishes for that one person mom, even if he isn’t extremely dashing. Even if his gap-tooth is wider than the ‘normal’ and his trousers bigger than his regular size. It isn’t always about the looks; never always about the money but the pride pouring from his heart to his ‘outwardness’. Never shy to be seen walking with the love of his life, never afraid to hold her hands and scream to the world…’she’s the one,’ no matter the situation”.
“We crave for that man who prays too and never preys; on our emotions, vulnerability and sometimes naivety”. She continued, “Raphael broke me beyond repairs, I doubt I can ever feel the same again. I yearned for so long, I ached and prayed. I’m not sorry to say that the feelings are all gone, right now I just want to have fun and kill his joy”.
Kate said with finality in her voice. Her resolve to carry on with the late-night drama so strong.
“Kateyyyy…baby listen to me. What could he have ever done? No woman should disrespect her husband so. It is near frustration in his own house. You know I won’t condone that and I appreciate that you never act this cold towards him in public,”
Kate breaks in
“Don’t thank me just yet mom, because that is about to begin, and in earnest too!”
“You don’t talk to me like that young lady, that I didn’t birth you doesn’t make me less your mother and be careful how you tread. Whatever the issue is can and will be resolved.... He doesn’t spend much time with you? Is that it? You know his first call is to the congregation; the house of the Lord if that is your reason for throwing tantrums, sure we can work around that”.
“No mom. It’s not that,” a broken Kate sobbed
“So what is it my darling… Why have you let a once happy home turn sour?”
