Is It True What They Say About Private Universities? (See Photos Below).

Just a few hours after I saw this and had a good laugh, because that's what this is, right? A simple silly joke..., I moved passed it only to be met with this other picture below a few hours later.

According to Linda Ikeji, "Twitter user @tosinslim reveals the kind of test questions allegedly asked at Babcock university. Probably for entrance exams. Peep question 14...lol."

Although it's very uncertain what kind of test questions these are, I couldn't help but wonder about the conception that the exams in private universities are pretty watered down.
Then I remembered how so many people who couldn't make it in my university, especially in law and medicine, went to private universities and graduated top of their classes.

A number of people who failed out of medicine made the move to Igbinedion and they graduated top of their class. An acquaintance of mine who slipped from a 3rd class to a pass and was slipping even further down decided to run away from UNN and went straight to Igbins. She graduated with a 2.1. And she wasn't the only one!
Another chic failed out of medicine, made the move to Med-rehab, still failed at that and then moved away to Igbinedion. She graduated from Igbinedion as the 'highest graduating student' of her set, as they call it. This isn't to suggest that it's Igbinedion alone that we noticed this trend, Babcock and Covenant weren't exempt.

I've also always wondered how private universities are able to produce so many graduates with 1st Class certificates from one set alone...

Are we to believe that the lecturers and facilities in private universities are so darn good that they turn the academically challenged to first class students OR are private universities just playgrounds where everything is made easy?

What say you?

Comments

  1. I thought I was the only one who had this opinion but truth is private university students areare helped to pass, only a few pass bY them selves, two of my cousins went to Babcock and covenant respectively and I know the stories they come home with. To me,private uni, is a home for lazy students, yy do u think they pay all those money?? Because they can't seem to use their brains,it's so pathetic and am so not into private universities.

  5. I had this exact argument with my sister and her friends just last December.
I was of the opinion that, anybody that goes to any of our private universities here in Nigeria and graduate with a Third Class or a Pass does not fear God at all, especially because of their expensive school fees ooooo.
Furthermore, how can you be in a school where just common attendance ( i.e go to school and sit down and listen or pretend to listen to the lecturer), gives you 20marks, and your CA comprises of either Assignments( which most times is always the case)or a test to get anoda 20marks = 40Marks i.e already an " E".
In the above scenerio, you only need a minimum of 20 marks in your Exam to make a " B". So tell me why a child that went for all the lectures wont be able to make at least 20/60 in exams to make a "B" in almost allyour courses? Then someone will still come out with a Third class or Pass ooo. Na so my sister begin pitch me, that it have do oooo, but i was just too angry at the way they spoon feed them there and they will still come out half baked, even with their so called first class, so i continued venting. Dat is how, one of my sisters friend stood up and walked out on us, na later my sister begin tell me say her friend went to CU ( Convenant University), and graduated with a Third Class. Till date, this my sister's friend has " disfriend" my sister and I and does not talk to us again ooo.
Anyways, the truth is just that i know how hard i studied ( most times on my own) in Uniben to make my 2.1 with a GPA of 4.16.
No hard feelings to graduates from Private Universities oooo, but If we bring most of their first class graduates to any of the Federal or State Universities, just a hand few of them will make a 2.1 and majority of them will make a 2.2, because they make it so easy for you guys to pass there, while in public universities( Asides from sorting), you have to work really hard to pass.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hahahaha, you really got to your sister's friend but that's the truth because I feel they have no reason to fail due to the fact that they r been spoon feed,I had a friend that told me in his uni once u attend class u hav D,so hw hard can thing be for them

    2. Rotflmao!!!!!!!!!!!! #faints! Anon!!! Ha! If she be winch, you go hear am o! Haaa! Lmaoooo!!!! Your sister's friend must have been very very unserious! In a fed uni sef.. if u graduate with a 3rd class(whether twas a lecturer that caused it or any other factor beyond your control) you'll be considered as someone that went to school to play. I still can't wrap my head around how someone would graduate with a 3rd class in a private university! "Owo jona!!!"

You should have listened to your sister tho! Lmaoo!

  6. All of you are just ignorant. The reason a lot of people do better in private than federal universities is due to a lot of reasons.
    1. We are fewer in a class therefore we pay more attention and the lecturer is able to get through to us better. Unlike in federal schools were there's up to 500 in one class with people receiving lectures through the windows outside.
    2. Our lecturers are friendly with us and their doors are always open if we have any issues. If you don't understand something in class you can go to your lecturer and he or she will explain better. Unlike in federal schools where lecturers are mean and wicked and even try to make you guys fail. Or the ones that will fail you if you don't sleep with them.
    3. No cultism in private schools. That's pretty self explanatory.
    4. The attendance marks in my school is just 5%, don't know about that 20% that person is saying there. And in my opinion I think the attendance marks idea is brilliant. It is an incentive to get students to attend classes and it works very well. I know however I've been felt too lazlazy to go to class and then I think of that mark and I drag my lazy but to class. Unlike in federal schools where lecturers are even happy when students don't attend classes.
    5. When you think of how your parents suffer to pay your fees you'll sit up and work hard. Unlike in federal schools where most students even pay their fees themselves or one aristo or another.
    6. The hostels are usually within 10 mins walking distance to lecture halls. Unlike in federal schools where students residence are usually far from the class so it disuades some students from going to class especially when they have just one lecture for that day.
    7. We have constant electricity and running water supply. Unlike in federal schools. This is also self explanatory.
    8. No drinking, partying and that type of carrying on allowed in private schools unlike in federal schools. Do I need to explain the ramifications of that to you?
    9. We are not allowed to leave school anyhow unlike...
    10. In my school if you don't have 70% attendance in a course in semester you won't be allowed to write that the exam for that course, do I still to explain the incentive to you?
Now with all these strong points you can see how students in privates unis do a lot better than their counterparts, or you can still choose not to see reasons, your cup of tea

NB. When I say private unis igbenedion is not included cos as far as I'm concerned that school is just a federal school with an expensive tuition fee.
NBB. A lot of the federal school corpers I interacted with in camp were nothing to write home about; from their grasp of the the English language to their general intelligence. So shameful. You could easily differentiate them from the private university graduates.

    1. Your points are really cool. I've been itching to know what the fuss is all about between private and public universities. Thanks. Though I'll have to disagree with some points. #3, #6, #8, #9, and #10. It's obvious that you're trying to make us understand the atmosphere created in a conducive private university environment, but issues like drinking, partying, cultism, and distance to school environs don't necessarily deter or make the work terrain of both unis stressful. As for the attendance, the same rule of 70% applies to the public universities.

      Delete
    2. Memphis thanks for replying me like a human being. #3 you can agree with me that cultism can affect a student's studies somehow. #6 I know that if my hostel was far from lecture halls, I definitely wouldn't have attended some of my lectures. #8 common, how can drinking and partying not affect a person's studies? #9 I know if we were allowed to leave and come back whenever we want some people will leave school for weeks and not attend lectures. And #10 oh well.

      Jenny

      Delete
    3. Lol @ #10 oh well. Because of #10, students would attend classes irrespective of the distance to schools (#6). Drinking and partying depends on the individual (#8); sometimes students just want to let off some steam and these seem to be the only way out (ofcourse there are exceptional cases). Again because of #10, anyone who *escapes* from school must find his way back (#9). As for #3, I agree with you a little, but the issue of cultism can be a non-issue to many students of public unis.

I'm a proud graduate of Covenant uni..and to b honest, when u talk about the 'buhahas' about private unis, dont add CU as part of d bandwagon. Do proper research about the school's graduates..we make a difference wherever we are..either in organisations or anywhere else. Every school has bad eggs..perhaps d few ones u may have met were part of the 10% bad eggs.

Oh well..I can't start telling you all my achievements since I left Covenant Uni bcos it's not necessary. Is it from winning the best customer service staff in my bank in Nigeria and getting recognised for my work..people envied me for that, I give glory to God. Now i work in a bank here in UK. My naija colleagues still communicate with me about handling issues at work, cos dey miss me n I miss dem too. we hv a great relationship. I'm glad I went to the school cos it has impacted my life positively..from the priceless values to the entrepreneurial skills, to the consciousness of being diligent and embracing excellence at everything we do, making a positive difference wherever we go..etc. The list is endless.

Going to a fed uni doesn't make you any less inferior, we're all specially made by God with our unique capabilities. I love making peace. Please 'Live and Let Live'. Cheers!!! Hv a blessed week. One love to all TTB readers.

  11. Jenny Clap for yourself. Your Epistle above is the height of an advanced Secondary School called a University. Bikonu private school graduates that claim you guys are more intelligent than public university graduates, i believe your schools have been in existence for over a decade now, so please just mention one major person that has graduated from any Nigerian Private University school, that is a force to reckon with internationally in academics or any international achievement that is attributed to any Private University? Thinking... Cant even think of one person or one thing.
Am sure u know that Public Universities have alot of answers to the above question. Starting with Uniben being attributed to the first university to build a car in Africa, to Unilag producing the youngest Doctor ( i think she is 21), ever in Africa. Or is it your Lecturers, that are mostly products of Public Universities that teach you what they where taught in Public Universities? Let me not even go to the international awards and scholarships accorded to most public school graduates.
Or is it in the case of Masters abroad, that you guys seldom get admissions because Most Private Schools are not internationally recognized, hence most of you run to the UK to do your Masters, just because all the Uk cares about is your money.

    2. Anon. Call it what ever you want. Like I said I didn't say we are more intelligent, as I said before nobody is more intelligent than the other it just takes hard work and a conducive environment which private universities offer. Also, like you pointed out private schools have just been out for about 10 years so people are at still skeptical about it hence the lack of recognition. As for the ones that are a force to be reckoned with are any of them under the age of 25? As private unis are still young most of their graduates are still getting their careers off the ground. A lot of private uni graduates have achieved a lot, just because you haven't heard about them doesn't mean it's not there. And YES private schools are glorified sec schools and it was very annoying while I was there lol, but I believe it helped me a lot knowing myself.

Truth is most young people that are doing very well these days are mostly private uni graduates, when i joined the bank, the best students in training school wr all from private unis, especially students from CU, they r always very brilliant. When my sis wrote a test for a job at the National hospital, she had the best result and she was the only private uni graduate there. I still feel bad i went to a state uni, anyone that can afford a good private uni should not deprive his/her children the luxury of that, i hate public schools so much, a lot of crap go on there, some intelligent people get frustrated thr as well. IMO most fed/state school graduates are usually jealous of private uni graduates and always try to put them down, but hey thats just my opinion.

  12. Ok....guys please let's not resort to insults in getting our points across...we are better than this.

That said..i am a graduate of Covenant University....proudly. I am always amazed when I get to hear that we were spoon-fed. I can only speak for CU since I don't know what happens in other schools.

Sure, maybe the study environment was a tad easier than fed Universities. Trust me,no one had a free pass in CU everyone worked for thier certificates.Have you paused to wonder why some still graduated with 3rd class and pass despite been 'spoon-fed'?

Till date, the only time I remember been so tired that I slept in my cloths(cloths,jewelries,shoes,make-up) was in CU.The GST lecturer,Mr Wogu insisted my whole set defended an assignment all in one day,if you didn't that day....oh well...you automatically got zero.

I submitted my project proposal during the 300lvl/400lvl break and I remember thinking I would be like the first to round up my project in dept. My supervisor has other ideas....was he thorough? He would correct my draft and kept bouncing the corrected copy until I almost got frustrated.

I remember a friend of mine who was as at 200lvl on a first class had to go for summer school because she failed a course.

Trust me, in CU we don't such questions as above for exam questions. If you think otherwise, kindly bring forth your proof, lols

  13. In addition to my above contribution (i.e. Annoymous 4:47pm), I dare to say there is really no basis for comparison between Private and Public Universities because Public Universities will always be BETTER than Private Universities. You know why, we have the population and more public universities in the country, this two FACTORS works to our advantage, because in as much as we have alot of bad eggs in the Public Universities, we also have alot of very GOOD eggs that over shadows that of the Private Universities.
Just relate my example above to Nigeria, because Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, no matter how bad Nigeria's economy is, it will still remain the GIANT OF AFRICA ( I.e because of her population), and no matter how good the Economies of Ghana and SA is, they can never usurp Nigeria's position as the Giant of Africa.
Hope you get my gist now...

In all unis,be it private, federal or state.you will always find the 1st class(efiwe),2nd class(efiko) and 3rd class(filebe) students.so why call out private schs?

Thing is, I have interacted with lots of CU 'children'(biko allow me! Lol! No vex!) and you definitely can't call them dummies. They are actually well rounded and intelligent individuals. Their system makes education easier and (probably) more flexible than the (very) rigid fed uni system. I think that private uni students don't work half as hard as their contemporaries in government unis. That's not to say they don't work hard, just not as hard. I has this talk with my sis a few weeks ago and she was making a case for covenant students. How is it possible that half of a whole class graduate with a 2:1, in my whole school, there was a year that only 5 or so students had a first class yet these schools produce first class students like they're a factory or sumn..

What I think is that, their lecturers are more sympathetic than the government lecturers probably because they pay so much.

PS: Mabel and Anon Ugo.. Y'all almost put me in trouble at work with your "sparing", I had a good laugh reading your comments. Thanks :)
Y'all shouldn't take things so personally tho, its a blog, everyone is entitled to their own opinion(s), respect them and air yours. #Peace

    1. In my dept, in our graduating class there was only 1 1st class student out of about 60, so no, my school doesn't produce first class like a factory madam! I did not attend CU so can't speak for them.

    2. Lmaoo @ "in my whole school, there was a year that only 5 or so students had a first class"

Is it their fault that your lecturers are sadists and don't want anyone to excel.. see sunshine o. When a lecturer would "categorically"(lmao) tell you A is for God, B & C are for him, D is for exceptionally brilliant students.. E for the few lucky ones and F for the larger percentage of the class! Ehn?! Or a lecturer telling you he graduated with a 3rd class so you graduating with a second class upper or a first class means you're better than him and he won't let that happen. Or a lecturer telling you to your face that you're coming back to carry his course for no good/sensible reason! How do u explain all of that! So it Is their fault that their lecturers are not sadists! See painment o! Lol! I still can't forget Dr. Yahya! Lmaoo! That man almost gave me high blood pressure! Mstchew! Lol!

And the truth is there are many half baked federal university graduates. Some can't even compete with CU students... so what are we talking about?! Nowadays, fed unis are just living on past glory. Redundant courses, 1987 notes, some don't even come to class at all and would be asking abstract questions during exams... no knowledge was passed on. So what's the point! mstchew!
Why didn't you go back to ur school to do masters! Hehehehehee! See her forming federal university is the standard and we are badass! Lol! *yinmu*

    6. Madam Jenny, your point has been noted.

      @Kabuoy... Traitor oshi! :p

I understand that its not easy to pass in any school. To be honest, I have met some brilliant CU students and some of them are making waves in the banking industry especially in IT cos I hear their stories (but CU is the only one i know and hear about). I also know that many federal unis churn out half baked students who just read to pass.

I don't know what my point is but I understand all the arguments for Private unis. And i still maintain that federal unis are better.

  23. Loool at some comments, I went to a private university and was not spoonfed. I suffered to do my project sef, struggled with wicked supervisor. The thing is if u read and attend lectures and do all your supposed to do u cannot fail except they are following you from your village lool. There is hardly any victimization and wrong results can be corrected with struggle. I believe if federal unis were like this more people will graduate with better grades. The problem is there is a difference between book knowledge and practical knowledge which we need a hang of in private unis(me included). And yes mabel your tone is offensive :) take it easy.

  26. Well i can only speak about the School i attended. i attended Coventant University and got a degree in accounting. i can confidently say we weren't spoon fed in accounting class. Our lectures taught us properly and exams were hard. a few years after graduation, most of us are chartered accountants with ICAN or ACCA.

When i just started my NYSC, my employers were impressed with the knowledge of accounting i had that they had to retain me immediately after service. I wasn't even one of the best in my class, was like no 30 out of 100.

Wish I could find some old question papers to send to thelma and see what federal uni people will say about it
I remember my 300 lvl statistics where a particular question's answer filled the whole answer booklet.
It wasn't beans. My roommate made a 1st class then and I knew how hard she worked. Very brilliant and hardly slept. Always carrying books.

Turia Pitt Suffered 65% Burns But Loved Conquered All...

Amazing Story Shared by Dr. Ben Carson on Facebook, i thought it is inspiring and i decided to share;

The Australian ex-model Turia Pitt suffered burns to 65 per cent of her body, lost her fingers and thumb on her right hand and spent five months in hospital after she was trapped by a grassfire in a 100 kilometre ultra-marathon in the Kimberley. Her boyfriend decided to quit his job to care for her recovery.
Days ago, in an interview for CNN they asked him:
"Did you at any moment think about leaving her and hiring someone to take care of her and moving on with your life?"

His reply touched the world:

"I married her soul, her character, and she's the only woman that will continue to fulfill my dreams."

This made me very reflective. I just wonder; if the person you love today encounters an incident or accident that transforms who they are physically, it could be amputation, it could be paralysis, it could be severe burns that scald their flesh beyond recognition, w…

Good morning people!
Just checking in to sign the register. Lol. It's been a very busy week and it looks like it might be an even busier weekend. I was hoping to get some writing done when I got to the airport yesterday but I even almost missed my flight. It was hopeless trying to do any work on the plane as it was bumpy af, and this toddler behind me wouldn't stop screaming in piercing shrieks like he was being exorcised.
I got into town pretty late and needed to keep an appointment ASAP. I'm heading out right now and it's going to be a long day, but thought I should drop this first.
Have a splendid day. Im'ma be back soon.

THE ‘NEW’ SIDE CHICK: I WAS HER

A side chick is commonly known as a mistress or a woman that’s romantically involved with a man who is in a committed relationship.  However after doing some reflecting, I realize that’s not the only type of side chick.  I want to discuss “the new side chick”–a woman who decides to stay by a man’s side after he has expressed his lack of relationship intentions with her through his words or actions.  So many women have made this mistake at least once in their lifetime, and unfortunately I’ve done the same thing. I like to think of the new side chick as an appetizer.  You’re there just to satisfy the immediate appetite of the man, but as soon as that mouth-watering entrée comes out to the table, you will get pushed to the side, literally.  Why?  Because that entrée is what he really wanted; he went to the restaurant to order steak, not hot wings.  You were just a placeholder, fling, temporary commitment, or  maybe even just a “good ol time” until what he really wanted was presented to hi…

Shhhhhhh....

I'm in an amebo mood tonight. Don't ask me, I honestly don't know why. Also I'd like to share too but I'd do that anonymously in the comment section. Tonight I want to talk about secrets. It's ok, we can all be anonymous.
Is it true that EVERYBODY has a secret?
Is there anyone here who doesn't have a secret? I'd really like to know; You're a completely open book and there's not ONE thing about you that you wouldn't mind other people knowing about? Please raise your hands up.
And for the rest of us, what's something about you that no one knows, or very few people know? Who's got a dark secret here, or a weird one, or a funny one even? I really don't mean to be invasive but I don't want to be the only one sharing, plus I think hearing other people's secrets is quite fun, don't you think?

Let's Be Random Together! (Open Keypad).

Hey guys, a while back blog reader F said something about creating an Open Keypad post, where you can write whatever you want in the comment section. I thought it was a fun idea!
So who is interested? Comment on anything you feel like, ask me or anyone a question, talk about how your day went, your job, your interests, tell us something about you that we don't know, share a testimony with us, rant about anything you feel like, talk about your crush/boo/spouse/relationship/marriage, challenges you're facing, ANYTHING AT ALL!
I'll only make one request; that we stay civil.

(F it was you who made this suggestion, right? I'm not too sure and I can't even remember the post the comment was made on).
BTW please Ejoeccome out come out, wherever you are!
