In October 2003, just a few weeks into campus life, something strange began to happen. People would walk up to me and begin conversations that were very strange to me. I'd have strangers wave and some come over to hug me. Once someone came and started her sentence with"that thing we talked about yesterday"... I was lost.
Then one afternoon I walked into the cafeteria and saw her standing there, she was tall, we were almost of the same complexion, we had the exact same braids and just by looking at her all those strange occurrences finally made sense, I could see how they'd confuse her for me. What I didn't know was that she had also been experiencing the same thing.
Yet, she wasn't a stranger. Years before that, I'd seen her in the hostels for years in Queen's College but we never spoke. In fact back then in QC, people would walk up to me and ask if I was Phury's sister. I had no clue who Phury was, yes I'd heard alot about her (she was quite legendary in QC) but I'd never met her. Still some would insist that I was! It was years later in Uni that I learnt that the person whom people had confused me for was actually the one who was Phury's sister, the same person they'd confused me for in secondary school!
Another thing I didn't know was that that day in the cafeteria was the start of a life long friendship. We have so much history, thanks to Elle and other things.
Yet, its been a "weird" friendship. We have had several quarels, some lasting a day, some lasting for months. I liked her yet I disliked her because I couldn't understand certain things about her. I couldn't understand the enigmatic quality she possessed. I couldn't understand why so many people deferred to her, wanted to be associated with her by all means and would give anything to remain in her good books. I couldn't understand why she had people kissing the ground she walked on, some exposing themselves to ridicule in the process, yet still not caring. Hmmmm. I couldn't understand it.
I've seen Chocolate grow from a girl to a woman, no I don't mean I've seen her develop bigger breasts. LOL. I mean I've seen that girl who was extremely stubborn and somewhat proud turn into a selfless, beautiful individual (this change began when she started dating her husband in 2nd year. Thank you Funky!!! LOL). Chocolate takes no prisoners, she's a no-bullshitter, she takes no nonsense from anyone and would tell you how it is straight up. She also has a spirit and person that can never be intimidated. Yet, she is the most generous, most caring and MOST LOYAL friend a person can have. If she calls you "friend" then best believe that she'll do almost anything for you!
No she's not perfect, she's very headstrong (which can be both good and bad) and she's got her other flaws. Still, this is one of the wittiest persons I know. She always has a comeback and some things she says will have you reeling; like how on earth did she think about that?. Yes, she's very funny too, without even trying, and its never a dull moment around her.
And that's why she's got the most friends among anyone else I know. I don't mean friends that are just friends, but people willing to move mountains for her, no matter how big. And after all these years I finally understand it; Chocolate is special.
So my darling friend; Summer's mummy with baby number 2 on the way, some times I think of some things in our past and I want to punch you in the face (you could be annoying shaaaa, and we had some unpleasant quarrels), yet I love you so so much, and I'm happy that after all these years I still get to call you Friend. Happy belated birthday sugar. You're one in a trillion. May you remain supremely blessed and divinely favoured. Amen.
Chocolate hosted a few close friends at BLD last night. I was able to take only a few pictures.
Meanwhile I'm suing BLD, someone either wiped my name off the board, or wrote over it. Either way I would not condone such injustice!
Chocolate's birthday was on Friday the 19th of June.
