I miss Nollywood movies. As in old Nollywood. New Nollywood is ok and it has some really great talents, Adesua Etomi for instance seems to be the rave of the moment. But most times new Nollywood movies don't do it for me. The video quality, lighting etc are top notch but the actors and storyline often leave me feeling like I was served Jollof without meat.
I miss old Nollywood. I remember when I used to hustle at the video rental shop in school back then to borrow a copy of the latest movie. Back then once you saw Genevieve on the cover that it was almost certain that it was going to be a good one. When you saw Genny and Omotola on a cover, Oh boy, it was a must have!!! Stephanie Okereke was also another guarantee that the movie had finesse, with her beauty queen look and her great ability to translate roles. Rita Dominic was also very major! She was great at her roles and versatile too, she had range and was so much fun to watch. Whether she was acting the campus queen or the Island big girl or the naive village girl, she did it well.
These ladies were simply awesomtastic and I miss seeing them in movies. In Hollywood actors KILL to stay in the movies, to get roles even as they get older, to stay relevant and maybe one day attain legend status. Here it seems our actors outgrow Nollywood movies, some seem to be satisfied with being Instagram celebrities. Others branch out to other things. Most of them obviously think that going from actor to director/producer is only a natural progression. Blehhh! A few times however they grace us on the silver screen, but it's just not the same!
I miss those movies and I miss these ladies.
So, we know they were all great, but if you had to give the crown to only one, who would be your Nollywood Queen?
