Do You Need Your Boyfriend's Permission To Cut Your Hair?

I saw this question on Linda Ikeji's blog a few months ago and did not think much of it until this morning.

This morning I decided to wash my hair at home and had planned to condition it, for the first time ever with eggs, honey and olive oil. Yeah, up until this morning I've been trying to figure out if I'm going natural or I'm just stalling until my next relax.

After I washed my hair I couldn't help but notice at the limp tips of the relaxed hair and compare it to the thick rich texture of my virgin hair. Without thinking twice I grabbed a pair of scissors and chopped the hair off.

About an hour later when I was done with conditioning and drying, I stood in front of my mirror and it was classic case of expectation vs reality.

I was confused for a few minutes. But what most confused me was what possessed me to chop my hair off. You see, my plan had been to wash my hair at home and then go to the salon to have it woven into two braids with hair extensions, but that had become utterly impossible as my hair was now too short to hold unto.

I stared at my face in the mirror and my face stared back at me, until we were both jolted into reality when my phone rang, the ring tone even louder in the enclosed bathroom.

It was a friend, a boyfriend.

"I'm not quite sure, I'd planned to go to the salon but me I don't know anymore. At this rate I'd probably go to a barbershop instead to get a proper haircut", I said when he asked what I was doing.

"Err, yes, I just cut my hair", I said when I noticed he was confused.

The conversation that followed had me fucked up.

Apparently he had thought that this was something I should have first discussed with him, a decision I should not have made on my own. No, I did not need his permission but my failure to ask was a sign of disregard for his role in my life (or something like that...).

Without saying too much, let me ask you what LIB asked a few months ago Ladies, Do You Need Your Boyfriend's Permission/Consent To Cut Your Hair?

Guys, what's your take on this. If your lady unexpectedly shows up at home with a low cut where her hair had been long, would it upset you if she didn't first tell you about it? Yes, No? Why?

Haha! I'd thought I could rock my short hair with pride but for alas it's back to the wig life for me, so I called Iya Bisira from down the road to come plait my hair 😭😭.

  1. Thelma quick question, how many boyfriends do you have? πŸƒ

    1. Hahaha. A boyfriend. 😝

Oya come back and answer the question I asked. 😘

  2. All I see is your skin, it's so lovely 😍😍😍
I am not sure where I stand on informing your significant other before chopping off your hair. I feel it depends on who you are relating with. Personally, I would tell my boyfriend before cutting my hair, but it won't be because I need him to give me a go ahead, but to rather inform him, just like I would if I have a headache. To each his own anyway.
BTW, I think you look great with the weaving.

    1. Seconded.

No need to type too much.

  3. Thelma!!! That your expectation went through 'processes' na! You sef were too hard on your hair!πŸ˜‚.
As to your question, my first reaction was "for what?!"πŸ™„, but I quickly remembered one time I was toying with a cut myself and how I 'casually' bounced the idea around severally with then BF just to be sure he was cool with it. I know for sure it had nothing to do with getting his permission. More like I was trying to be considerate of other people's preference (I also mentioned it to my sister, mum and BFF), even as I minimized the shock of seeing the change it'd have brought to my face.

In future, I'll most likely still tell whoever is around before I cut my hair or make any other body/feature altering change. I like to they'd factor me in too in such matters.

    1. This are my thoughts exactly. Though on some occasions I did some stuffs I didn't take anyone into account.

  4. If your significant other was keeping his beard, do you think he will deem it an obligation to tell you before cutting it ? To me things like this are non issue, if I want I tell if I dont want I won't tell.

  5. Informing him ahead of the deed is a good idea. Not quite asking permission or receiving consent, but I think he deserves an FYI.

  6. Well not permission per see, but I think he should know.
Imaging ur bf decides like a customer I know, to start relaxing his hair, and putting something that makes it look shinny always and hard I presume cos the thing looks like gel(I keep wondering what that man's wife thinks, a matured man with that kin hair)
    Anyways, u get my gist

  7. Hello to all, it's really a pleasant for me to visit
this site, it contains useful Information.

  8. When I first cut my hair, I was with my ex, I just showed up one day with short dreads. (I cut and rolled it that day, spur of the moment decision, even me sef shocked myself)
I cut my hair again recently, July. The hubby came back from work and saw me with short hair Mohawk style... He looked at me and shook his head, next thing he started hailing me that I actually look good. So nope i don't think informing is necessary I mean its just hair. When hubby started beard gang, i wasn't "informed" either, I just woke up one day and saw biabia everywhere lols. Its hair! Provided it suits you why should one make a public announcement before action? Me that cut my hair I didn't even inform myself, I just did it.

  9. Nope, not at all. Gf is free to do whatever she likes with her hair. But she shouldn't seek admiration of her new hairstyle from me if I don't like it either. Chrisyinks

  10. I went bald early this year, like scrapped my whole hair. I was bored. When i shared the pics on snap one guy said "Dee do and have a bf so you don't go making drastic decisions like this thinking it's cool". I was like what has bf got to do with it, he replied that if I was his gf he would never ever consent to me cutting my hair...
I was in the talking phase with my current bf, the day he saw after I cut my hair he went "Wow dee, you look good but why didn't you tell me, like we were talking on the phone you could've mentioned it"
He still makes reference to me making decisions about myself without involving him using the hair incidence as a number one example

Turia Pitt Suffered 65% Burns But Loved Conquered All...

Amazing Story Shared by Dr. Ben Carson on Facebook, i thought it is inspiring and i decided to share;

The Australian ex-model Turia Pitt suffered burns to 65 per cent of her body, lost her fingers and thumb on her right hand and spent five months in hospital after she was trapped by a grassfire in a 100 kilometre ultra-marathon in the Kimberley. Her boyfriend decided to quit his job to care for her recovery.
Days ago, in an interview for CNN they asked him:
"Did you at any moment think about leaving her and hiring someone to take care of her and moving on with your life?"

His reply touched the world:

"I married her soul, her character, and she's the only woman that will continue to fulfill my dreams."

This made me very reflective. I just wonder; if the person you love today encounters an incident or accident that transforms who they are physically, it could be amputation, it could be paralysis, it could be severe burns that scald their flesh beyond recognition, w…

Good morning people!
Just checking in to sign the register. Lol. It's been a very busy week and it looks like it might be an even busier weekend. I was hoping to get some writing done when I got to the airport yesterday but I even almost missed my flight. It was hopeless trying to do any work on the plane as it was bumpy af, and this toddler behind me wouldn't stop screaming in piercing shrieks like he was being exorcised.
I got into town pretty late and needed to keep an appointment ASAP. I'm heading out right now and it's going to be a long day, but thought I should drop this first.
Have a splendid day. Im'ma be back soon.

One More Post...

He was my coursemate, crush, then my boyfriend.... he was super
intelligent, smart, tall, dark and handsome. Believe me he got
swag, but he didn't seem to notice me. (I'm a nerd but a sassy one
if I say so myself).  So oneday I decided to take it to another level..
After listening to a song "IF YOU LOVE SOMEBODY TELL THEM THAT YOU
LOVE THEM and watching the season film of The Secret Life of
American Teenagers. ..when Amy Jeugerns mum told her "you are only
young once". LOL that part got me.
Hope you know what i mean?

Though I'm okay with chemistry class I approached him to coach me for
the Quiz that was coming up, we found out that we had this
great chemistry between us.. hehehe both the covalent and
electrovalent bonds....

So one thing led to another till one unusual Saturday. I invited
him to my house and he came. The guy got swag, he even came
with a packet of durex condom.
We talked for a while and and and and and and
See how you are serious dey read this story....!

A side chick is commonly known as a mistress or a woman that’s romantically involved with a man who is in a committed relationship.  However after doing some reflecting, I realize that’s not the only type of side chick.  I want to discuss “the new side chick”–a woman who decides to stay by a man’s side after he has expressed his lack of relationship intentions with her through his words or actions.  So many women have made this mistake at least once in their lifetime, and unfortunately I’ve done the same thing. I like to think of the new side chick as an appetizer.  You’re there just to satisfy the immediate appetite of the man, but as soon as that mouth-watering entrΓ©e comes out to the table, you will get pushed to the side, literally.  Why?  Because that entrΓ©e is what he really wanted; he went to the restaurant to order steak, not hot wings.  You were just a placeholder, fling, temporary commitment, or  maybe even just a “good ol time” until what he really wanted was presented to hi…

I'm in an amebo mood tonight. Don't ask me, I honestly don't know why. Also I'd like to share too but I'd do that anonymously in the comment section. Tonight I want to talk about secrets. It's ok, we can all be anonymous.
Is it true that EVERYBODY has a secret?
Is there anyone here who doesn't have a secret? I'd really like to know; You're a completely open book and there's not ONE thing about you that you wouldn't mind other people knowing about? Please raise your hands up.
And for the rest of us, what's something about you that no one knows, or very few people know? Who's got a dark secret here, or a weird one, or a funny one even? I really don't mean to be invasive but I don't want to be the only one sharing, plus I think hearing other people's secrets is quite fun, don't you think?

Let's Be Random Together! (Open Keypad).

Hey guys, a while back blog reader F said something about creating an Open Keypad post, where you can write whatever you want in the comment section. I thought it was a fun idea!
So who is interested? Comment on anything you feel like, ask me or anyone a question, talk about how your day went, your job, your interests, tell us something about you that we don't know, share a testimony with us, rant about anything you feel like, talk about your crush/boo/spouse/relationship/marriage, challenges you're facing, ANYTHING AT ALL!
I'll only make one request; that we stay civil.

(F it was you who made this suggestion, right? I'm not too sure and I can't even remember the post the comment was made on).
BTW please Ejoeccome out come out, wherever you are!

TTB readers doesn't this tweet below remind you of something?
That mail that someone sent me a few weeks back.
But why on earth should a man sleep with his son's fiancΓ©? But what am I saying, some men even sleep with their daughters...

Oh well, I'm throwing the question to you. What has happened in your life that you never saw coming, you never hesperred it, you never imagined could happen, you never imagined could happen to you?
It could be good, it could be bad, it could be ugly. Do tell!
And it can be more than one. Let me tell you a few.
-owning a blog -week long dry fast at Prayer City (I never hesperred it).  -staying in an (emotionally) abusive relationship.
The others require anonymity. LOL. Now over to you.
